Case study
Dr. Dave’s 411 is a health and lifestyle brand. Dr. Dave himself is a cardiologist with over 150,000 followers on Facebook. He is growing his YouTube channel, and releases weekly videos on relevant health topics. His friendly style both educates and entertains.
Declan Davey (freelance copywriter) recently wrote a video script for Dr. Dave’s 411 on the health benefits of eating walnuts, which Dr. Dave shot a video for on YouTube.
As of April 2020, the view-to-like ratio for the video is around 18%, significantly higher than the YouTube experts’ benchmark of 4%.

CHALLENGE ➡️
Copywriting for a video script — the project brief.
To construct an informative and engaging YouTube video script for Dr. Dave to put out on his channel, Dr. Dave’s 411.
The video script would need to highlight the benefits of eating walnuts, particularly for those with an interest in cardiovascular health. Trustworthy research studies would need to be referenced.
The copy and design strategy for this video script example can be seen below.
SOLUTION ➡️
Copywriting for a video script — the final product.
Copy: Authoritative, humorous. Research included had to be from well-respected sources, in order to show Dr. Dave is a voice of authority in the cardiology field. I reviewed relevant journals and incorporated studies from the American Heart Association and NCBI. Dr. Dave has a warm, light-hearted presentation style, so the educational content was balanced with humor throughout the copy. An example of this is seen here:
‘‘As I like to say, with a small portion of walnuts each day, you cannot and WAL-NUT fail.’’
Design: Interactive, action-driving. Media suggestions are included in the script for the video editor, such as ‘‘insert ding-ding sound & celebration clip,’’ to increase the production value of the video. A clear call-to-action is provided at the end of the script:
‘‘Be sure to subscribe *point to subscribe button below* if you’d like to be notified of future videos. You’ll get one per week — not too few, not too many.’’
Big idea being expressed: Eating a handful of walnuts a day has a welcome list of potential health benefits, including heart function, hair strength, and brainpower. Introduce them as a tasty daily snack.
